Connecting During Deployment预览
Whatever is True
When you or a spouse are deployed overseas during a time of war, it’s not easy to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, or praiseworthy. Yet that’s what Philippians 4:8 tells us to do.
And I find it interesting that Paul, while himself a prisoner, begins by challenging us to think about “whatever is true.” If we are ever going to stand a chance of rejoicing in the Lord (Philippians 4:4), we must come to terms with what is ultimately true. The opposite is to live in a state of denial, passivity, or laziness . . . all of which leads to trouble.
During deployment, have you come to terms with the truth? Here are the questions you need to ask to put on the belt of truth (Ephesians 6:10-17) if you are to meet the challenge “think about these things”:
Am I being careful to recognize when I believe my feelings instead of what I know to be true?
Am I putting others’ needs (my spouse, my family) ahead of my own, or am I thinking only of myself?
Am I living in denial of the challenges and threats of this deployment?
Am I also open to the lessons that God has to teach me?
Do I truly realize that my only hope is in the saving power of Jesus Christ?
Only if you are willing to understand and accept the truth that God loves you and has a plan for your life (John 3:16); that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23); that Jesus is the only provision for redemption (Romans 5:8); and you can ask and receive Jesus by faith (Romans 10:9-10), can you receive the gift of forgiveness and eternal life in heaven (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Where do we find truth? In His word—the Bible. Read Psalm 119:160.
And Who is truth? Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
Jesus Christ is the Truth. Think about these things.
1. What are two traits that are excellent or praiseworthy about your spouse?
2. What difference can the truth about Jesus make in your life?
If you want your marriage to grow strong, one of the most important questions you and your spouse should answer is, “How are we going to grow spiritually?” Because God created marriage, it’s not merely two people in a relationship, but three—a husband, a wife, and God.
