Exceeding Expectations Like David

David's life challenges every single believer to trust God in the way he did. David knew what trusting God was like. He was a man full of experiences, who encountered God in every stage of his life, which is why the Psalms make so much sense to us. They are timeless and applicable even to the present day. Author Philip Yancey suggests that David wrote and sang the psalms as therapy for himself. Somehow telling himself the truth, enabled him to rise above any fear and see a transcendent God who remained in control.

In an employee’s performance appraisal, there is sometimes a category that says “Far exceeding expectation”, which correctly describes David. He felt qualified to fight Goliath because of  extraordinary personal experiences he shared with King Saul. In 1 Samuel 17:14 CSB David narrates “. . whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, I went after it, struck it down and rescued the lamb from its mouth. . .”. What a proven personal track record of this young man! What experience best describes you? Do you have a story that describes what God is to you?

In another incident, we read in 1 Chronicles 22 that even though David knew he would not be allowed to build the Temple, he was allowed to make preparations.   His desire was to worship God and to provide the best supplies for the Temple, and he inspired his son Solomon to create a sanctuary that was worthy of the Lord.  Don’t settle for less is the key principle to success. According to William J H Boetcker people divide themselves into 4 classes;

1. Those who always do less than they are told.

2. Those who will do what they are told but no more.

3. Those who will do things without being told.

4. Those who inspire others to do things.

Which category do you belong to?

In 1 Chronicles 11 David appointed people who had proven track records of extraordinary achievements and who far exceeded expectation. We can even learn about structure & leadership from David’s governance. Finding the right fit for your team will build the synergy to exceed expectations. Keep pushing your limits; you will be recognized as a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14).

Three remarkable characters from the Bible will help us in finding the divine purpose for our lives, exceeding expectation and being a risk-taker to fulfill the divine purpose.
