Thought:

Rejection never feels good, whether it is from classmates, a sports team, a drama role, or a job you’ve applied to. Rejection from your friends and family at home can feel even worse. Jesus experienced this kind of rejection when He went home to Nazareth. When we feel alone and rejected, Jesus can understand. Jesus didn’t let His rejection stop Him, however. He continued on His mission to bring the gospel to the whole world. He also sent His disciples to go out and preach the gospel in many different villages, and they were not always accepted either. Their journeys took a lot of faith, just like it takes a lot of faith for us to share the gospel today.

1. How did the people of Nazareth respond to Jesus’ visit? Why did they respond this way?

2. Why was Jesus amazed in Nazareth? Was this positive or negative amazement?

3. Did Jesus send the disciples out alone?

4. How did the disciples participate in Jesus’ mission to spread the gospel?

Engage:

Evangelism, or sharing the gospel with others, can make us very nervous. As we saw in today’s passage, it might even cost us relationships with people we care about. Nevertheless, Jesus calls us to do it. He equips us with His Spirit and He does not send us alone. Find a friend and commit to asking each other weekly how you have been doing in sharing the gospel and to take a few minutes to pray for one another. You are never too young to share the gospel—we have been sent by God Himself with good news for all people and you play an important role in bringing that message to the world!

Deeper Waters:

Memorize Matthew 28:18-20, a famous passage known as “The Great Commission.” (A commission is an instruction or command given to a person or group of people.)
