The Joy of the Overflow

It never ceases to amaze me how different we all are and how someone discovers their unique gig in life – whatever that may be. What a wondrous thing that is to behold! 

You see, we can easily get caught up in the comparison trap of looking at the people around us or on social media and thinking, “Oh, I could never do that!” But when I see someone put that aside and focus on doing what God made them to do, being who God made them to be, it leaves me in awe of God. His grace gives us those gifts – His imagination, His plan blesses each one of us through the gifts and the abilities of other people.

And that, my friend, is Jesus’ ideal plan for our lives – a plan to use us as the entry point for His floodtide of blessing into this world. 

Getting our heads around that idea is an absolute gamechanger in our understanding of what it means to make a powerful difference in this world. So here’s another reminder of what that looks like, straight from Scripture:

“On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

(John 7:37–39)

God’s plan is simple and straightforward – to fill you to overflowing so that you’re full and satisfied, and then out of that abundance to have rivers of living water, the Spirit of God Himself, flowing out of your heart, day after day.

There are going to be stresses and strains along the way. But as many hurts as there are, He will also bring healing, as He changes you and He moulds you to be even more perfect for His plan. 

And you know, when you’re using His special gift that He gave you by His sovereign choice, for His glory, you will be having the most powerful impact in this world that you possibly can have.

You can make a powerful difference, amen?!

• Do you worry about or avoid sharing Jesus’ love with others? How does the thought of acting from an overflow of love, rather than a sense of duty or obligation, change your perspective?

Lord, You once said that it is to Your glory that I should bear much fruit. That is the desire of my heart; to long for You, to know You, to be filled by You, to be used by You for Your glory in the lives of those around me who so desperately need to know you. This is what I ask. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
