UNCOMMEN: Bumper Sticker Theology预览
The Christian Fish
According to tradition, ancient Christians, during their persecution by the Roman Empire in the first few centuries after Christ, used the fish symbol to mark meeting places and tombs or to distinguish friends from foes.
At some point, some marketing company capitalized on an industry by making the Christian fish a sticker for your vehicle. By doing so, the person displaying the symbol is stating they are a believer in Christ Jesus. On the surface, this seems like a great way to let people know you are a believer, just like wearing a cross or a t-shirt that says something around your faith in Christ.
While it’s easy to peel and stick the fish on your car, take a moment and reflect on whether or not your sticker matches your walk.
Our scripture verse tells us that love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control are fruits of the Spirit, and we are to practice those each and every day. Our actions must match our speech. Just think of the message you send when your walk doesn’t match what you display.
The Babylon Bee teases that today’s cars are now equipped with a retractable fish emblem so they can drive and act any way they want to without ruining your testimony. As with all humor, there is a thread of truth to it, and we may need to ask ourselves if our walk matches our bumper sticker.
While we may think our advertising only has a small effect on a person, it may impact them and their view of Christians much more than you think it does.
Uncommen Questions:
Is the fish on your car only to show off?
Does your walk outside of the car display the fruits of the Spirit?
Uncommen Challenge:
I challenge you to take a moment and examine your walk before you put a bumper sticker on your car, a tattoo on your arm or an Uncommen wristband on your wrist. Do I reflect Jesus by showing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control?
Scripture Verse:
Galatians 5:22-23
