Crucial Conversations: Listen with Interest
Joseph Grenny, author of Crucial Conversations, highlights in a Harvard Business Review article four ways to prepare for a tough conversation. The final way he recommends is to "get curious."
Recently, I had a tough conversation with a family member. Fortunately, before I confronted him with my set of facts, the Holy Spirit prompted me with curiosity for his side of the story. I discovered that my facts were wrong, and instead of chastisement, this person needed compassion.
It was my inclination to be curious, and willing to listen, that resulted in a better outcome.
Proverbs 1:5 teaches, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.”
Before you complete a crucial conversation, be curious and humble enough to pursue all the facts.
