I Don't Know What To Believe

Heading into any new NFL season, we usually have beliefs about the performances of particular players and a sense of what a team’s record is going to be.

But as games start to be played early in the season, it doesn’t take long before our beliefs and ideas turn into questions and confusion, and we don’t know what to think about these same players and teams.

We then have a choice to either throw away the beliefs we held before the season and quickly change our minds…or stick with our convictions and wait for the season to play out.

Just like NFL fans go back and forth on what they think is true about teams and players, we can let our beliefs about God be affected by our current circumstances.

How quickly did we start doubting God after hearing about the worldwide pandemic? We might have said to ourselves, “He can’t be a good God if He allowed this to happen to us.” How easily did we discard our beliefs once the adversity struck?

Although we may wrestle with questions like these when facing trials, as followers of Jesus, we must stand firm in our convictions about God and believe He’s always loving, good, and faithful. Even as COVID-19 changes our circumstances and our beliefs are challenged, He remains the same and still moves in amazing ways.

When encountering such situations that test our beliefs and cause us to wonder what to do, James 1:5-6 offers this great promise: “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask Him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.”

Today, let’s be mindful not to waver in life, but to keep our faith in God alone. Let’s keep our beliefs rooted in Him, trusting in His unchanging character…and seek His wisdom, believing He’ll give it to us.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, my circumstances are tough and I need Your wisdom to guide me. Help me not to doubt Your goodness and faithfulness, and not to waver in my faith. Please give me the wisdom to believe what is true. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
