Christ in Current Events

The first generation to go to integrated schools in the South happened in the 1970's. Yet, in the last year, few things are more apparent than the lack of racial reconciliation. Specifically, we can see that churches are rarely engaged with one another, or with this issue.

Passages like this in Philippians are helpful to revisit. All of Paul's language really challenges us to say: what does it mean to be members one of another, to be connected to one another, to imagine ourselves for eternity as members organically and deeply connected? What does it mean to cross over those barriers in life, and what does It look like in this moment of time for Christians to extend themselves?

Think about Jesus being described by Paul in Philippians as emptying himself and extending himself in ways that brought light to all of us. That's something very important that we need to be doing as Christians at this time. It particularly an opportunity for entrepreneurs and business leaders who have wide networks that others don't.

What does it look like for those of us who are sitting in places where we could really extend ourselves in a way that would bring healing and break down barriers? My hope is that we're in a time where there might be new light that would come back into our churches; and we might, indeed, see ourselves as people who are giving witness as ambassadors for the reconciling work of Christ in the world.

Let's look at the racial divide and the issues of intergenerational poverty and think "Where do those of us who have means engage?" And as God's people, let's ask ourselves what it specifically looks like to extend ourselves as humans to where we might live, love, and bring hope to the world.
