Think About It

Through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, He accomplished what we could never do on our own- reconciliation between humankind and the Father. Jesus made this known to the disciples when He said they could go directly to the Father with their requests. Because they loved and followed Jesus, everything changed. Because of this reconciliation, we can also confidently approach God without mystery, symbolism, or ritual.

Of course, that doesn't mean that everything will go smoothly from now on. While Jesus' disciples celebrated their belief in Him, He pointed out that despite this, they were minutes away from being separated from Him. Our time on earth is going to be full of turmoil and confusion, but just like Jesus, we can walk in the faith knowing that we would not be alone because God is always with us. That is the peace He gives!

Live It Out

  • Do you believe that God loves you and listens to your prayers? Ask Him to remind you through His Word that Jesus has bought your access to the Father through His death and resurrection.
  • Have you distanced yourself from God because of the sorrow, suffering, or confusion you experience? Confess your struggles to God and meditate on the peace He offers you in a world full of trouble.
  • This week, memorize the final verse of this chapter as a reminder that Jesus has overcome the world.

No Matter What Comes Through Those Doors

In John 16, the disciples are nervous, scared, and confused that Jesus is leaving, and the world will turn against them. Jesus tells them that no matter what happens next, they are not alone. The Spirit will guide them, the Father loves them, and Jesus will come back for them. No matter what comes through those doors, Jesus has won the battle; we can trust what we can’t always see.
