Grace in evangelism

Evangelism refers to spreading the gospel—the good news that Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins and rose from the dead to offer eternal salvation to all who believe in Him. The gospel makes no demands of the unsaved person except to believe in Christ.

There are many ways to share the gospel. Some popular presentations misuse Scripture and illustrations. Many end up asking the unsaved person to do something besides belief—to be baptized, keep the commandments, and so on. But anything a person must do besides believe perverts the gospel of grace. Our priority should be to communicate that salvation by grace is through faith alone and in Christ alone. Keep grace free and faith simple. Some passages showing that faith alone is needed are John 3:16, Acts 16:30–31; Romans 3:21–24; Galatians 2:16; and Ephesians 2:8–9.

Our motives and manner in evangelism must show God’s grace. Sadly, some preach for selfish gain or in contention and competition. Paul is our model; do not accept money for evangelism or take shortcuts, mishandling the Word of God. Aberrations, like the prosperity gospel which promises health and wealth to those who believe, do not reflect the unselfish grace of God but the selfish greed of humankind.

Our attitude and conduct must reflect grace. The gospel does not make us better than unbelievers; it only makes us forgiven. We should be humble. When our conduct and words are tempered by grace, we will attract people rather than repel them.

Accept unbelievers as God does. Life change is not necessary for them to receive salvation, only faith is. God will transform them later. God loves all people and wants them to be saved, so share the gospel with all (2 Cor. 5:14–15; 1 Tim. 2:3–6). Jesus crossed boundaries to bring the gospel to the Samaritans through a sinful woman. Reflect His same passion for sharing the gospel.

God works in people to bring them to faith (John 6:44; 16:8–11; 2 Cor. 4:1–6). We cooperate with Him by our willingness to go and witness to them. Prayer is paramount. Ask God that His gospel would reach the lost, and pray for boldness, opportunities, and clarity in evangelism.

Grace in evangelism is demonstrated with a clear and free gospel, pure motives, blameless conduct, a humble attitude, a passion to share with everyone, and prayerful dependence on God.
