God does not forsake Elijah

Elijah has retreated into the wilderness because he is spiritually and physically exhausted. But God does not grant his wish to die. Instead, He sends an angel to bring Elijah food and water. Not once, but twice, since “the journey is too great for you”.

God knows that Elijah has no strength left. But He wants his servant to go to “the mount of God”, Mount Horeb or Sinai, and provides everything he needs for this journey. The strength of this godly food enables Elijah to walk forty days and forty nights to the place where God will meet him.

This mountain was well known by every God fearing Israelite. When the people of Israel had left Egypt and were crossing the wilderness towards their promised land of Canaan, they spent about one year at Mount Horeb to receive God’s instructions. On this mountain, God revealed Himself to Moses and made a covenant with the people. So, when the Lord tells Elijah to go to Horeb, He is inviting him for a personal encounter! The Lord does not abandon his exhausted servant, but gives power to the faint (see Isaiah 40:29)!

Elijah. Man of Courage, Man of Faith, Man of God.

The Bible is full of stories about people who try to live to God's glory - with ups and downs. Elijah is such a man. He is a prophet who serves God wholeheartedly, but is also prone to despondency and depression. He confronts the king fearlessly, but flees from the queen. And in all this, God continues to care for His servant.
