Moments for Mums: Generosity - Part 2

It can be easy to fall into ‘tit for tat’ thinking: if I do something for someone, they will owe me one. Even in Christian circles, this transactional nature of generosity is commonplace, and sometimes the Bible can prop up this understanding.

But I think being generous leads to a transformation in the giver. Being generous out of love provides a place in our hearts to know God’s generous love for us. Generosity isn’t transactional; it is transformational.

As mums, we generously give our bodies, our time (and our minds!) over to our children, and for many years, we don’t expect anything back from them. Spending time watching a content baby sleep blissfully on our chest after being fed provides us with a refreshing spirit, no matter what we have endured for the last 45 minutes. It is that generous love we so willingly give to our small children, without expectation, that will transform our homes into loving, prosperous places.

Question

Do you do things with the expectation of the favor being returned (by your partner, child, or friend) or because of the generous spirit within you?

Prayer

Father, thank you for the gift of your Son, given to us with the ability to transform our eternal future. Please help us to remember to give as you do.
