On the Shoulders of Giants预览
Heads Held High
I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. -Psalm 3:5
Everybody was taller. That’s how things looked to the then oldest member of our church—a petite 101-year-old retired schoolteacher, who seemed smaller than most. But she walked tall. “I always watch my posture, holding my head up,” she explained. “No slouching!” She learned that rule as a child. She heeded her parents’ urging to “sit tall”—head held high—even on rare days when she felt down. Now, despite 100+ years of living, her posture was still beautiful.
When we’re feeling low, what a help it is to know that God lifts our heads. King David understood that well. Betrayed by his rebel son Absalom and those who sided with him, David faced a crisis (2 Samuel 15:10–14). “But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high” (Psalm 3:3).
David was speaking of the might of God’s power to lift our spirits, even in the face of enemies. And God would defeat David’s enemies, frustrating the counsel Absalom had received from his advisors (2 Samuel 17:14). In God, indeed, David would be restored to his rightful throne.
God also is our glory—our weighty sovereign Lord—who carries our burdens along with our sorrowing heads. As David declared, “The LORD sustains [us]” (v. 5).
What encouragement! So, in Him, look up and walk tall—head held high!
