Pursuing the Call: A Plan for New Missionaries预览
Language learning is not a task that is unique to foreign missionaries. Many people choose to learn a second language for a variety of reasons, and in some parts of the world, it is even rare to be monolingual. If you want to do ministry in a foreign country, you will almost certainly need to learn another language. Even if English is commonly understood where you’re going, you should take the time to learn the local language if English is not the native language.
Nelson Mandela is attributed with having said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart." Missionaries are in the heart business much more than the head business. Even if you are able to get by with English, you will have a greater impact on people’s lives and a more enriched experience personally if you take the time to learn the local language.
In today’s reading, you will see the power of language in two biblical stories. As you read today's reading, consider the importance of language learning in your own ministry.
