What Do You Have in Your House?

Like the widow we talked about in day 1 of this devotional, as we go through the process of growth and transformation, and as we receive encouragement and direction from God during our times in His presence, He may reveal to us that our breakthrough can actually be found in our own “house.” He may show us that the breakthrough is in the gifts with which He has endowed us or in the other resources He has given us through His anointing, grace, and provision.

God’s Means for Our Breakthrough

Let’s read what happened to the widow and her two sons:

So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” (2 Kings 4:2 NKJV)

In her desperate situation, the woman told Elisha, “I have nothing except for a jar of oil.” From her perspective, she had nothing. But Elisha was trying to communicate a revelation to her, indicating, “Look again at what you have, because what you’re perceiving as nothing is actually something.” And the moment the woman put her “nothing” into the hand of God, something supernatural started to happen.

In the same way, your “nothing” is about to become something. You are going to have a supernatural transformation of your perspective in which you see that certain aspects of your life that you have considered insignificant, aspects about which you thought to yourself, “Surely, this can’t help me; surely, this is nothing compared to what I’m facing,” are actually the key to your breakthrough and the beginning of your miracle.

Then [Elisha] said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” (2 Kings 4:3–7 NKJV)

When Elisha told the woman not to gather only a few vessels, he was giving her a little clue because he knew what was about to happen. She filled every vessel she had collected. When she reported this to the prophet, he said, “Sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” The woman received an overflow of provision. The moment she took her nothing and began to pour it out into empty vessels, it began to multiply—and it kept multiplying.

Your Jar of Oil

My question to you is, “What do you have in your house?” Perhaps it never occurred to you that you might already have something that is a significant key to experiencing your breakthrough. Ask God to help you identify your “jar of oil” and how to use it. You may receive a prophetic word (for yourself or someone else) that you need to speak, or you may have a spiritual gift stirred up inside you that you need to exercise. The Holy Spirit may prompt you to pray for healing or deliverance for another person. Or, a creative idea or business plan may come to you in prayer. When you pray, write down every thought and impression you receive, no matter how unimportant it seems, and commit it to God.

Note that you not only need to discern your jar of oil, but you also need to discern the empty vessels to pour your oil into, because this is a two-part equation. When you combine these two aspects, you will see multiplication. Sometimes, you just need to take action on what God has already given you to create, build, organize, or minister. The more you pour out the anointing God has placed in you, the more it will increase. “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6 NKJV).
