Year of the Bible: Part Six of Twelve 预览
The Lie of Scarcity
Building the temple of God was the very thing King David wanted to do and perhaps be known for. However, God intervened and said, “Not you. I’ve got someone else in mind for that!” David’s response to this is an amazing testimony to his heart.
David could have complained, “But Lord, it was my idea!” but instead, he just went all out to make the next guy succeed. He gave of his own money and even took up an offering for the next generation to use in building “his idea” and naming it after the next king.
It happens all the time: someone else gets the privilege, someone else gets the credit, someone else gets awards (and you don’t), someone else is the center of attention in a gathering of friends, or a speaker is expressing thanks to all who helped on a project and forgets to mention you.
Sometimes we even get jealous of the success of others. Jealousy results from the lie of “scarcity”: that God and His purposes for us are not enough! Our flesh often wants to be seen doing the things we see another doing. Will God’s rewards be enough, or do we need the praise of men?
Question: Does God have enough attention and affection for you that you can live contented and satisfied without the accolades of others? Can you celebrate the accomplishments of others, or do you get discontent watching others flourish?
Prayer: Time for a heart-check with the Holy Spirit. Let’s ask the Lord to help us honor others in their callings and gifting, celebrate their accomplishments, and reject jealousy.
