The Book of Enoch & the Bible预览
Parallel Passages
Jude, in his letter, quotes the Book of Enoch directly, a quote pulled from Enoch chapters 1 & 27. While this is the only direct quote from Enoch in the Bible, the biblical overlap with Enoch reaches far beyond that.
Many scriptures adopt language or thought reflecting Enoch. We’ll cover a small sampling from the New Testament here to demonstrate how closely Enoch aligns with the thinking of New Testament writers.
-----
Rev 4:11, Heb 4:13
En 9:4-5 MSV “Your name is holy, glorious, and blessed unto all the ages! You have made all things, and You have power over all things. All things are naked and open in Your sight. You see all things, and nothing can hide itself from You.”
-----
Abraham talks to a dead sinner from the region of the blessed:
Luke 16:26
An angel talks to Enoch in the region of the dead, explaining how the righteous and the sinners are kept separate when awaiting judgment:
En 22:9-10 MSV “This division was made for the spirits of the righteous... This division was also made for sinners when they die...”
-----
Rom 2:11
En 63:8 MSV “His judgments show no partiality.”
-----
Rev 5:11
En 40:1 MSV “...I saw thousands of thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand —I saw a multitude beyond number and reckoning who stood before the Lord of hosts.”
-----
Rev 4:6
En 40:2 MSV “On the four sides of the Lord of hosts I saw four presences...”
-----
Rev 9:1
En 86:1 MSV “...and behold, a star fell from heaven!”
-----
1 John 1:7
En 91:4 MSV “(The righteous) will walk in eternal light...
The nice part about these parallel passages is they help us have confidence in Enoch’s content. It is largely irrelevant of whether the biblical writer was thinking of the Book of Enoch, because these passages show harmony. The Book of Enoch doesn’t contradict scripture and it makes for a safe source of extra-biblical study, offering background information helpful in reading and studying the Bible.
We hope you enjoyed this study.
