Acts: Gospel Mission Then and Now

It’s hard to look at the “great persecution” against the church that began with the martyrdom of Stephen (Acts 7) as a blessing, but note the result of the persecution marked here: “they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria” (Acts 8:1).

The persecution led to the fulfillment of Acts 1:8, where believers were moved to the specific places they were called to take the gospel. A reminder we still need today: discomfort and setbacks do not mean God is not moving. Trust Him and His plan.

Those who were scattered to new areas did not hide, pout, or fear – they preached the Word. Most of us have never been faced with the potential of this magnitude for persecution, yet we have cowered over far less pushback. Desire the boldness on display by the believers here to proclaim the word of the Lord.

Again, we see the same repetition you read about yesterday about how our words and actions work together as our witness. The crowds paid attention to Philip “when they heard him and saw the signs that he did” (Acts 8:6). People are most likely to pay attention to the gospel and believe when your words and actions align.

Also, we must never underestimate the power of sharing the simple message of God’s overwhelming grace. Simon amazed the crowds with his magic, but Philip was just as captivating with the message of the gospel. Most people you meet have had “run-ins” with religion, but every other major world religion is rooted in what you have to do to get to heaven. Christianity is rooted in what Jesus has already done for you. It’s the message our broken world is desperate to hear.

My favorite words from this passage:

“So there was much joy in that city.” - Acts 8:8

Hearing the Word of God and seeing the works of God produced joy throughout the city.

I don’t have to know where you live to know that your city could use more joy. This verse lets us know how we can do that!

Church, let’s fill our cities with much joy.

God, I want to see more joy in my city. I know that what my city really needs is to hear Your Word and see Your work. I’m willing to do what You want me to do, Lord. Make me more like Jesus. Use me so others can come to know You. Do it in Your way and in Your time, not mine. I love You. Amen.
