The Beauty of God: A Six-Day Series of Reflections to Invite Wonder 预览
Beauty in the Church
As someone who grew up in churches that resemble shopping malls and movie theatres more than places of worship, I look with fascination on Europe’s cathedrals. Timeworn pillars arch overhead, giving way to ceilings gilded with ornamentation. The stained-glass windows, elaborate organ pipes, and stucco paintings unite to signal a certain sacredness. Visitors in reverent tones light candles.
Yet, God chooses to indwell His people over every architectural wonder. He calls His people sacred and declares them a temple for the Spirit. How much more majesty does the family of faith, then, contain compared to even the most ornate basilica?
Although imperfect, the body of believers witnesses to the beauty of God. In the community of the church, we catch sight of the wonder of God’s self-giving love. Through bread baked for neighbors, intercessory prayer, and service to surrounding communities, the face of Christ materializes. We perceive the perfect oneness and transformative power of God by observing His people.
The beauty of the church is manifold and participatory—each member contributes to its diversity. Like stones laid to construct a house, every individual plays a unique role in offering “spiritual sacrifices” that further reveal God’s nature (1 Pet. 2: 4–5). The rhythms of church, including weekly gatherings as well as communion and baptism, illuminate the splendor of God. Further, God charges the church with preaching scripture and spreading the good news it contains. Like incense flowing out of a cathedral, the family of faith diffuses the aroma of God’s truth and grace to the world.
An Invitation
If you are in Christ, God declares that you are His dwelling place, a sacred temple filled with the Holy Spirit. Meditate on this truth. What, if anything, makes it challenging to believe? Give praise to God for His indwelling presence and consistent nearness.
Reflect on your experience with the family of God. In what ways have you seen the face of God through the lives of others? Consider reaching out in gratitude to one person through whom you have witnessed an expression of Christ’s love.
