Scripture
These people draw near with their mouths and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me. Isaiah 29:13
Summary
Hypocrisy. It's an ugly word. No one wants to be a hypocrite. The word hypocrite means actor. Someone who changes costumes depending on their environment. They act one way at church and another way with their friends. The truth is, God is not fooled by our acting. He sees our heart. He sees what we do when no one is watching. Who we are in private is who we truly are. God isn't asking us to have it all together, but He doesn't want us to pretend. What He desires is sincerity. He wants us to come to Him as we are...even if "as we are" is broken. He wants us to be real before Him and others. He wants our worship of Him onstage to match our worship of Him at home. When our lips match our hearts, God will be pleased.
Discussion Questions
1. Was there ever a season where you were being a hypocrite? If comfortable, share.
2. Do you agree with the statement: Who we are in private is who we truly are? Explain.
3. Do you feel you can be completely honest with God and others? Why or why not?
4. Any other thoughts, comments, ideas or questions you'd like to share?
Closing Prayer
Father God, you know all things. You know our hearts. If anyone's heart is far from you in this group, draw us back. May our worship of you be authentic. May we be genuine and sincere. May our lives match our words of worship. May we seek to honor you in all things. Rid us of any hypocrisy. Unite our hearts to fear your name. Help us to honor you no matter where we are. In Jesus' name. Amen.
