Catechism: Powerful & Faithful Deliverer预览
When we think about Jesus, we often think of a Savior on a cross, a preacher telling a parable, or a baby in a manger. The Gospels are full of stories about who Jesus was and what he was like as he walked the earth. And in truth, he was all those things here on earth. But did you know that, as our resurrected Savior, he looks much different now?
The book of Revelation begins with a vivid description of the glorified, resurrected Jesus in heaven. Eyes like fire, hair white like wool, a shining face and a thundering voice—WOW! But take notice of what it says he was holding: Keys. And why are keys important? Because they promise access. They display authority. And if you hold a master key, well those are the most powerful of all because they will open any door in the building.
Jesus has keys, but they aren’t to a building or a brand new car. He holds THE keys—the keys to death and hell, and because he holds the keys, he has authority over them. Death couldn’t hold him, and because he has delivered us, death has no authority over us either! Hell threw everything they could at him, and Jesus not only took it but also emerged victorious. Colossians 2:15 says that “he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”
When you’re trapped in chains or stuck behind a locked door, the best person to know is the one who holds the keys. Jesus is the keyholder we can call on and cry out to. Who or what can stop him? If the grave and hell are powerless before him, then we should throw our doubts aside and put everything we’ve got into trusting Jesus, who is God our deliverer!
Consider: Have you ever thought about what Jesus looks like in Heaven? How do you picture Jesus when you pray or worship? As you read the Revelation passage, ask yourself how this description changes your perspective of Jesus or faith in him?
Reflect: Take a moment and reflect on your biggest challenge, problem, or fear, and place Jesus into that area of your life. How does Jesus’ power and victory give you hope in that specific area?
