Catechism: Loving Creator & Sustainer

What part of God’s creation inspires you? Is there a creature that you love or perhaps a national park you want to visit? Maybe it’s the Milky Way in the night sky or a place you’ve only seen online. Whatever it is, it’s been fashioned and made by a loving creator who can build and do what no one else can.

Psalm 104 tells of celestial bodies, animals, and many other pieces of creation that God made and gave purpose to. As you read it, it’s obvious that the writer is inspired by different details that God has created. God communicates who he is through creation, and verses 10-13 specifically speak of the creation of water—the source of life.

Water has many purposes, but the most important one is to sustain life. But water is also used for so much more. It's used for making us clean and to create electricity. And it's used for fun!

We love the sound of a babbling brook or the roar of a waterfall. People love to sit by the seashore and listen to the waves crash again and again. All these beautiful details were designed by God for us to enjoy from water.

And water reflects God in its created purpose! God himself is the source of all life, and he is the one who sustains us. Paul says in Acts, “‘For in him we live and move and exist.’” Everything depends on God’s ongoing power and love.

And if vast parts of God’s creation depend on water to sustain them, how much more should we trust in God, who is the source of all things, as our sustainer?

Consider: As you read Psalm 104, consider what you see God creating and where he is sustaining and providing. How does God sustain you?

Reflect: What is the response of the Psalmist to God in verses 33-35? Reflect on your response when you consider God’s creation, and note how your response is similar or different from the Psalmist.
