Home In God’s Plan Not Our Experience

It’s human to long for a home. For some, a place of security and bucolic restfulness. For too many others, the opposite. For some, a place of connection and renewal. For others, the opposite. And yet, our need for a home is encoded into our hearts from creation.

The Bible frames our emotional home as being near or in our Creator. The psalmist describes his relationship with God as a ‘dwelling place’ and a ‘refuge’ for those who seek Him (Psalm 91:1–2). In John 14, Jesus declares that He will prepare a place for His followers in His Father’s house (John 14:2–3).

The scriptures call us to the blessings of hospitality. In generously transforming our home into a welcoming place for visitors, the blessing is both theirs and ours. Abraham and Sarah famously welcomed three strangers, who turned out to be angels no less, into their home and showed them great hospitality (Genesis 18:1–8). In the New Testament, Jesus commends us to welcome strangers and promises that such acts of kindness will be rewarded (Matthew 25:35–40). The apostle Paul reminds us that our true home is in heaven where we will be reunited with God (2 Corinthians 5:1–2). This perspective is such a great encouragement, isn’t it? No matter how dysfunctional or delightful our earthly home may be, it will be eclipsed by the wonder of our heavenly home.

Whatever home means to you today, our Father in heaven has prepared a wondrous place of peace, security, restoration, and joy for you. The door has your name on it and He’s counting the days until you move in.
