Walk in Your Calling预览
Day 2: Building Disciplines
Praying without ceasing. It’s a discipline that makes Jesus a part of all things in your daily life. Now that doesn’t mean you just sit with your head bowed and eyes closed all day long. It means you invite God into everything you do from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep. Other disciplines include reading the Bible, worshipping, serving, and being a good steward of the things God has given you. Disciplines are all part of His plan for a personal relationship with you.
Jesus is the ultimate example of a disciplined person. The disciplines Jesus built during His life—knowing the Word, serving others, praying without ceasing—were because He knew the race set before Him (Hebrews 12:1–2). Scripture says Jesus was fully man and fully God. As a man, He was overwhelmed by the thought of the Cross. As the Son of God, Jesus persevered because of His love for humanity. A life of spiritual discipline should be an outcome of being in relationship with Him and pursuing His Word. This is possible because of what Jesus endured for you.
However, building discipline isn’t easy, as many things compete for your attention. Even if you are determined to build a specific discipline in your life, it doesn’t mean it will come naturally or without some effort on your part. But the more you make God a part of your everyday life, inviting Him into all you do, the more you will want to be like Him and spend time with Him. After all, the more you are around a friend or family member, the more you become like them. God is faithful; He won’t let you down when you’re truly disciplined about getting to know His character and His Word.
It’s safe to say that the disciplines you create can last a lifetime. So, what behaviors, actions, and practices are you repeating? Whether they lead to good or bad, life-giving or draining, effective or ineffective habits, it all depends on what you do on a day-to-day basis.
Be a person who lives a life that demonstrates discipline. Constant communication with the Father, inviting Him into all you do, and creating disciplines that build anticipation for what God will do in your life will never be something you regret.
Prayer
Lord, help me to slow down to recognize You and what my priorities are in this fast-paced world. Help me to spend quality time with You, because I know that when I spend time with You, I reflect more of who You are. Search my heart and desires, and use the disciplines I build to reflect what You want for me and my life. Give me a hunger that craves Your Word and a desire to hear Your voice. Amen.
