Broken Things Devotional - Matthew West

If you’re feeling weak, inadequate or disqualified, you’re in good company. Psalm 34:7 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” In the midst of struggle, it’s often hard to see past our own darkness. It’s difficult to view life outside of our current circumstances.

We tend to live in a constant state of never. We’re never going to land the dream job. We’re never going to get married. We’re never going to be given that promotion. We’re never going to get out of debt. We’re never going to mend that relationship. We’re never going to write that book, open that business, take that vacation…and the list goes on and on. We automatically assume our state of affairs will never change.

Well, there’s good and bad news on that front. Change is the natural progression of life. If anything is certain in this life, it’s change—for better or for worse. But the better news? We serve a God who never changes. He doesn’t waver, no matter the circumstances. His love and care for us is strong and steadfast.

Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Perhaps the broken among us are the luckiest. They are the ones at the feet of Jesus watching Him compassionately tend to their wounds. They are the ones who get to savor His presence. What a gift. When we’re broken, God is there to make us whole. He not only wants to repair what is broken; He wants to make us new.

We may feel like we have nothing suitable to bring the King of Kings, when in reality, all He wants is a heart fully submitted to Him. Bring your wounds; bring your hurt, bring your emptiness. He will put the pieces back together and make something beautiful out of your brokenness.

Now I’m just a beggar in the presence of a King / I wish I could bring so much more / But if it’s true You use broken things / Then here I am Lord, I’m all Yours
