Memorizing hymns

People who are clever at writing advertising jingles can make a lot of money. Know why? Jingles work. When short phrases are set to singable and memorable tunes, they stick like glue in people’s minds. I can still remember some from 55 years ago.

God revealed to Moses that his time on earth was short and that it was time for his farewell address to the Israelite people. Moses’ final words ran to 34 chapters. The Lord wanted the 31st particularly memorable—he had Moses write it in verse and set it to music: “Now write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness for me against them” (Deuteronomy 31:19). Music has always been a powerful vehicle for bringing God’s Word to a human heart and lodging it fast.

Still in my brain from childhood are also dozens of hymn stanzas. I am grateful to my parents and Christian teachers for helping me get those great words and tunes inside me, and I invite you to keep it going by learning important Christian hymns and songs and teaching them to your children and grandchildren.

I once visited the sickbed of a frail saint whose life was almost over. Together we sang, “Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender care, and take us to heaven to live with you there.”

We were both crying at the end.
