Connection to the Father is where we go to ensure our thoughts, values, and desires are shaped and informed by God.

Near the beginning of Romans 12, we read:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 (NIV)

If you want to be shaped and informed by the world, go to the world. If you want to be shaped by God, go to God.

We all hope and desire to experience:

Acceptance - Knowing we belong
Affirmation - Knowing we are valued
Approval - Knowing we are enough

God wouldn’t disagree that these things are important, and His Word talks a lot about how He sees, defines, and receives us. But He does disagree with where we tend to look for them: in humankind in place of Him.

We want to be people who are generous with words that affirm and actions that honor and elevate others. Accolades and approval are endorsements we can feast upon, whether it comes from our parents, bosses, teachers, Instagram followers, or friends. But what happens when it runs dry? When instead of acceptance, affirmation, and approval, you are met with rejection, criticism, or objection?

When we are dependent on receiving acceptance, affirmation, or approval from people, we are bound for disappointment. In a world where accolades and material treasures are prioritized, we must shake off any areas in our life where we are bending to the approval of people over the will of God. Living boldly as Christians requires us to fix our identity and our worth in Christ and in Christ alone.
