Dinner With Jesus

If we aren’t careful, we can end up thinking there are passages of Scripture that promise us things God doesn’t actually promise. We think if we live a good life, good things happen. We think if we make the right choices, nothing difficult will ever happen and we’ll live the lives we think we deserve. Of course, we’ve either experienced firsthand that this isn’t true, or we’ve seen it play out in the lives of others. Life doesn’t work that way because God doesn’t work that way.

There is something God does promise, however, and this verse in Isaiah tells us. The writer doesn’t tell us we’ll live pain-free lives because we trust in God. Instead, we’re promised we can have peace. Peace amid the difficulty and the pain is possible. But this doesn’t just happen by accident. Keeping our minds focused on who God is and what God is like is a habit, a muscle that needs exercising. Then, when we encounter difficulty, our minds, our hearts, and our souls will remember Who to rest in and the peace found there.
