Attend to Matters of the Heart

FUELED BY GRACE

Love is God’s motive, but grace is His fuel. Excuse me while I get a little fired up… but I think we often misunderstand grace. We throw the word around like a dirty, wet mop that we pull out to clean up our messes.

“Oh, you did that again?” we say. “Don’t worry. Give yourself grace.” No sir…this is not grace at all.

As sinners, we receive mercy from God first. Mercy is not giving people what they deserve. Grace is giving people what they need.

When we sin, we deserve separation from God, ourselves, and others. But God refuses to give us what we deserve. That is mercy. Then God, being rich in mercy, goes even further and gives us what we need – kindness and the reminder of who we are because we are so greatly loved!

Try envisioning God’s love as a fountain that flows eternally and abundantly. He can’t help but give and give and give. You are the vessel that God desires to continually fill.

Instead of obsessing over how you will fill your belly, let God fill your heart. He wants your heart to be full and your needs to be met so that you will be able to help meet the needs of others.

How amazing is that?

God’s love is the ultimate divine weight-loss plan – lifting the self-hatred, pride, and fear that burden us. With the burdens off our shoulders, we can take hold of a life transformed by the blood of Jesus. This journey is almost over, but God’s work in you is just getting started!

Reflect:

Describe a memorable time when God outstretched His mighty hand to you. Why would the God of the universe do such a thing?
