The affection we have for the transitory things of this world will only be trumped by a greater desire for heavenly things if we diligently read God’s word.

A More Excellent Treasure 

The Scripture of God is the heavenly meat of our souls. The hearing and keeping of it makes us blessed, sanctifies us, and makes us holy; it converts our souls; it is a light lantern to our feet; it is a sure, a constant, and a perpetual instrument of salvation; it gives wisdom to the humble and lowly hearts; it comforts, makes glad, cheers and cherishes our consciences; it is a more excellent jewel or treasure, than any gold or precious stone; it is sweeter than honey, or honeycomb; it is called the best part, which Mary chose (Luke 10:42), for it has in it everlasting comfort. 

The words of holy Scripture are called words of everlasting life, for they are God’s instrument, ordained for that purpose. They have power to convert through God’s promise, and they are effective, through God’s assistance. Being received in a faithful heart, they have ever a heavenly spiritual-working in them—they are lively and mighty in operation, and sharper than any two-edged sword, dividing asunder the soul and the spirit, the joints and the marrow (Hebrews 4 v 12). 

A Wise Builder 

Christ calls him a wise builder that builds on his word, on his sure and substantial foundation. By this word of God we shall be judged: for the word that I speak (says Christ) is what shall judge in the last day. The person who keeps the word of Christ is promised the love and favour of God, and that they shall be the dwelling place or temple of the blessed Trinity. 

Whoever is diligent to read this word, and in their heart to print what they read— the great affection for the transitory things of this world shall be diminished in them, and the great desire of heavenly things (that are therein promised of God) shall increase. 

Apply

Since there will be troubles and difficulties in all our lives, are you committed to regular, careful reading of God’s word, which is so vital for spiritual stability? 

Have you “printed” what you’ve learned this week from the Bible on your heart? How can you make sure you don’t just forget what you’ve heard? 

Pray

Ask God to help you build your life on his word, so your faith will withstand the assaults of the world, the flesh, and the devil. 

Ask him to help two or three of your friends to do the same, and to increase their desire for heavenly things.
