Lies: Devotions From Time Of Grace

You can have it all

Henri Estienne, Parisian printer and bookseller, is credited with the wry life observation: “If youth only knew; if age only could.” He must have been a senior citizen when he uttered those words—young people think they’ll be strong and invincible forever. His words bear the wisdom and flavor of one who knows the fatigues and aches of age.

It is a law of human existence that you pass through seasons of life. Each season is a golden age for a different thing. It is a lie that you can have it all. Much better is the life attitude that celebrates the blessings of each season and patiently waits for God’s timing to fill in the gaps: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (Psalm 27:14).

You can’t have both dating independence and a marriage commitment at the same time; you can’t have a batch of young children without exhaustion; you won’t have the financial security of a 70-year-old when you are 23. There is a season of financial self-denial; there is a season of financial happy exhaling when your debts are paid and you can travel. It’s all good.

You don’t have to have it all right now, and you don’t have to torment yourself as a loser if you have unfulfilled dreams and longings. Wait cheerfully for the next season of life; wait confidently that God has new blessings tomorrow; wait serenely knowing that the unlimited joys of heaven await you.
