Lies: Devotions From Time Of Grace

I won’t be happy unless I get my way

Ask a DJ—one of the most popular karaoke bar songs has to be Frank Sinatra’s signature “My Way.” Can’t you just see a guy with a flushed face after three beers crooning into a borrowed mike about how he did it his way? It’s a bit of a cliché, but the fact is that people will fight and claw to get what they want. They love Frank’s song because they want to live life their way too. But their dream of happiness that way is a lie.

Our Savior Jesus shows us a better way. His life’s mission on earth was to make the lives of other people better, not to seek His own power, comforts, attention, or pleasures. In the Garden of Gethsemane, in His earnest prayer gathering up strength for the final struggle with Satan, He expressed His dread of what lay ahead for Him, but He humbly and lovingly yielded to His Father’s will and agenda.

Jesus expects no less of us. Embedded in the prayer that Christians all over the world recite in private and public worship are His matchless words: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). You’ve said this a hundred, a thousand times. Do you mean it?

God’s agenda brings satisfaction and long-lasting contentment; God’s value system is more reliable than ours; God’s power is behind His way.
