Scripture

For by the grace of God given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Romans 12:3

Summary

C.S. Lewis said, "Pride is the mother of all sins." Pride is what caused Lucifer to fall and become Satan. Pride is what caused Adam and Eve to think they knew better than God. Pride is what leads us to do the same. Pride will be our downfall. That's why Paul warns that none of us should think too highly of ourselves. In fact, he says, "God gave you the faith and gifts that you have." So there really is no reason for us to boast. Everything we have; our brain, our intellect, our abilities, our health, our energy, our education, our experience, and our opportunities. They all come from God. We did nothing to earn them or deserve them. So we ought not to boast. If we're good at something, we should thank God and use that gift to serve others. Stay humble. God opposes the proud but exalts the humble.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you agree with the quote: "Pride is the mother of all sin". Why or why not?

2. We all struggle with pride. In what areas do you struggle with pride most?

3. Why do you think God opposes the proud?

4. How can we help keep each other humble as a team

5. Any other thoughts, comments, ideas or questions you'd like to share?

Closing Prayer

O Lord, protect us from pride! Please Lord, we don't want to fall. And we don't want you to have to humble us. Keep us authentically humble and reliant on you. Help us to understand that we are nothing without you. All of our gifts come from you. You are the one who deserves the glory, not us. Thank you for gifting us. Thank you for using us. We pray you would use our gifts to strengthen the church. Keep us humble in Jesus' name. Amen.
