Moses’ Call to Lead Excuses

Leadership Lesson

Often Jesus-style leaders have loads of questions — that’s normal and healthy — but it doesn’t stop them from leading.

Read Exodus 3:11-13; 4:1, 10-15

Comment

Moses is at a very different stage of life from Timothy and Elisha. He’s 80 with a lifetime of broken dreams behind him. Now God is finally calling him to take a leadership role in freeing his people from slavery in Egypt. After a pile of excuses that God patiently answers, Moses finally comes clean with God. He just doesn’t want to do it. Moses says, “Send someone else” (4:13). God doesn’t mind Moses’ doubts, but he gets really mad when Moses refuses his call. As God calls you to lead, he will patiently respond to your fears and insecurities. It’s normal to wonder at times if you will be able to do it. But please don’t refuse or ignore God’s call. God has plans for you. He is inviting you to join his team, to build his kingdom. Don’t make him mad by wimping out. God does offer Moses some assistance from his brother Aaron, but in the end, Aaron turns out to be more of a hindrance than a help. By all means, ask God your questions and express your fears about leading, but when he calls you to influence, make sure that you say “Yes.” In the end, Moses accepted God’s call and he was powerfully used by God.

Prayer

I know that you have asked me to step up as a leader and this means moving out of my comfort zone. I’m excited about the possibilities, but I’m also daunted by the challenges and expectations. However, I want you to know that I’m saying yes to the call. I will need your help and guidance, but I’m not going to pull back. Whatever it takes and whatever it costs, I’m in this for the long haul.

Personal Reflection

What makes you excited about leading? What are you worried about?
