POOL INFLATABLES, ONE; SINGLEMOM, ZERO

We were on our way to the pool, but we no longer had my husband’s truck to load all our supplies. My kids still had their hearts set on taking the giant inflatable pizza slice and flamingo along. Rather than deflating them and trying to inflate them again at the community pool, it seemed easier to just strap them to the top of the car. How hard could it be? I wondered. Men use bungee cords all the time to strap things down. Why not pool inflatables?

Minutes later, we were on the way. “Uh, Mom,” I heard my daughter say from the back seat. Her window had been rolled down for the fresh air, but now her head was craned outside, staring up at the sky as we drove down the highway.

“Mom! I think you should pull over!” my son cried out from the front passenger seat, his head now also out the window.

What had happened? Our pool inflatables were airborne. The bungee cords had only half-held, and the pink flamingo and giant slice of pepperoni pizza were flapping wildly above our car, like kites gone crazy. Other vehicles sounded their horns as we pulled over. Of course, we were thankful nobody had gotten hurt—and that our inflatables were safe! And together we laughed hysterically as we deflated them by the side of the road before heading on to the pool. All in a day in the life of a single mama! I thought, thankful to God for the times of laughter I could have with my kids. I knew that was a story we would talk about for years!

In the chaos of daily life, it’s so important to find joy in the little things. Sometimes it’s the crazy mistakes a mom can make—other times it could be a “Godwink,” a moment that tells you He is still in control when you know you’re not!

Lord, thank You for moments of laughter with my kids. And thank You for Your protection in my craziest of days! Amen.
