Matthew 5:9 — Blessed are the peacemakers
The Lord Jesus declares that His followers are blessed when they make peace, and that they will be called children of God. Jesus proclaims a startling message. God the Father will accept them as His children when they are peacemakers, just like He is. Jesus' followers actively establish peace. The calling of those who believe in Him and follow Him is to make peace and pursue reconciliation, starting with their own enemies. Just as God has reconciled Himself to us (Colossians 1:20), as peacemakers, we are God’s representatives. He is called "the God of peace" (Romans 15:33; 16:20; Philippians 4:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 13:20, all ESV). Peace represents the fullness of salvation that God bestows, healing of body and spirit, and healing of mutual relationships. Jesus gives peace and reconciles us to God. At the coming of God's Kingdom, He will call us His children. It will be revealed before the eyes of all people that Jesus' disciples are children of God. Let us live accordingly by obeying Him, and not indulging in quarrels or cultivating animosity. A true child of God has repented of these things and has become a peacemaker.
When Jesus was born, angels came down from heaven and sang: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!" (Luke 2:14 ESV).
Peace is a basic human desire, but people often fail to achieve peace despite their good intentions. There is so much conflict: far away, close by, and even in our own lives. The angels declare that God gives peace. He does not rely on people. He is able to bring peace on earth, where there is war and conflict and rebellion against Him. There is much to discourage us, but our comfort is the peace of God. He has sent His Son. The angels proclaim through their song: He comes with peace, now things will be good between God and you. Do not harden your hearts against this Child, for He has come to soften hard, dissatisfied hearts and make them receptive to the peace of God. Let the Prince of Peace be your King and proclaim to the whole world that He reigns!
