Troublesome Tongues
Our tongues get us into the biggest trouble. We speak before thinking, and we tell little white lies. We gossip, argue, and insist on our own way. We cling to our own perspective rather than trying to understand where someone else is coming from. These are all reasons for us to pause and use a little self-control. Our words matter, and it’s easier to practice being quiet than to repair what we’ve carelessly broken. Self-control is difficult, but cultivating it is worth the effort when compared to the damage that can be done by our words.
Self-control is not something we need to muster up alone. It’s a fruit of the Spirit that grows naturally in our lives as we surrender to Jesus. As we saturate our lives with the Word, we will be more likely to speak in a way that honors the Lord. Scripture is filled with guidance for speaking with wisdom and kindness. The more we fill our hearts with truth, the more likely it is to flow from our mouths. If we want our words to reflect God’s truth, we must allow our hearts to be transformed first.
Developing self-control requires humility because we must be willing to see our need. We must be willing to reflect on the impact of our words and notice room for improvement. We won’t put in the effort to cultivate healthy habits if we don’t think there is room to grow and change.
If you lack self-control, take the time to develop better habits. It’s not easy to change the way you speak, but it is incredibly powerful. Fill your heart with truth, and your tongue will follow suit. Let God shape you, and your life will reflect his wisdom, truth, and love.
What are some practical ways you can develop greater self-control?
