Identity in Christ
The way we view ourselves impacts the way we live. If we think too much of ourselves, we will end up hurting others with our selfish attitude. We’ve all met people who are prideful and boisterous. They think highly of themselves, and as a result, they feel free to act however they like. Their perspective often leads them to treat others with carelessness. Pride leads to a lack of thoughtfulness and humility.
On the other hand, insecurity can have an equally negative impact. If we don’t think highly enough of ourselves, we won’t offer the world the wonderful gifts God has given us. We will walk through life full of doubt, hiding away and hoping no one sees us. A lack of confidence causes us to question our worth and value. If we can’t understand our own worth, we won’t see the worth of others accurately either. God doesn’t want us to be prideful, but he also doesn’t want us to make ourselves small.
As believers, it’s important to be aware of who we are. Our sense of self should come from the Lord, and our actions should be impacted by his opinion. In fact, his opinion is the only one that truly matters. He is the only one who can see into our hearts and transform us into his likeness. If we allow him to, his Holy Spirit will show us where we are prideful or insecure. If we submit those areas back to him, he equips us to make the right changes. This is a far better approach than trying to decipher our thoughts and hearts on our own.
It is not prideful or presumptuous to be confident of who God made you to be. When your identity is secure, your actions will accurately reflect that knowledge. As God’s child, you are a wonderful creation. You are valuable, and you are wanted. You belong in his family, and you have a secure position in his kingdom. Let the way you move through the world be driven by your security in him.
How does your perspective of yourself impact how you approach God?
