Dip Into The Book Of RomansSample

DAY 2: THE GOSPEL
What’s in a word study? Sometimes, when you read the Bible, you can get a little overwhelmed – especially in Romans. A great way to tackle the harder texts is grab the repeated word and do a word study. That way, you will get more out of the sentence and therefore the verses around it.
When you understand the term ‘righteousness’, this verse comes alive. Righteousness doesn’t just mean right standing with God, it’s actually a whole lot more. Righteousness in the Old Testament described God’s faithfulness, His uprightness, His perfection, holiness, justice, fairness. So when Paul says that ‘in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed’, he means in the sending of His Son as King and Messiah, the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies are revealed; the faithfulness, the right standing, the upright behaviour of God is revealed.
God is showing Himself to be righteous in what He did for us in the gospel by sending His Son, like He promised! Because our God is faithful to His promises. Paul goes on to discuss how we accept this gift, by faith. We can’t earn this, we can’t live morally-upright-enough lives to be saved. The only way we can be saved is by faith (belief, trust, with the action of obedience) in what God has done.
