How Should We Pray?
One of the greatest promises we have in the Bible comes directly from God when He said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). And it’s through prayer that this promise is realized because prayer draws us close to Jesus Christ and ushers us into God’s very presence.
Praying and listening to God is how we express our love and devotion to Him. That’s why we shouldn’t just come to God with our “shopping list” of requests, asking, “Lord, I want this. I want that.” Instead, we need to place our focus in prayer on God first before presenting our requests to Him.
When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He gave them the model prayer which many still follow to this day. But notice how he began: “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:9-10). Notice that Jesus didn’t focus on Himself in His prayer. Instead, He first established who was in charge: God!
God isn’t a cosmic Santa; His gifts are so much better! So make it your prayer priority to glorify God first before you turn to yourself. That’s the attitude God wants you to have as you grow in intimacy and devotion with Him through prayer.

Spend time today in prayer glorifying God and not asking anything for yourself. Trust that when you seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, everything else you need will be provided for you!
