Five Myths About CEOs - Part IV
In their book, The CEO Next Door, authors Elena Botelho and Kim Powell dived deeply into survey data to determine what similar attributes surfaced for successful CEOs. Their findings debunked several myths we sometimes hold about CEOs. This time, we will look at a fourth myth: CEOs work harder than everyone else.
Although CEOs work hard, there was no data that suggests they work harder than others. Researchers also noted that hard work wasn’t a predictor of who would later become a CEO.
1 Thessalonians 5:12 teaches, "Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you."
CEOs work hard, but so do those around them. Let’s humbly acknowledge the hard work of all those who serve with us.
Questions for Reflection:
- If there is no research to back up the myth that CEOs work harder than everyone else, what attributes do you think contribute to them holding the positions they do?
- What are the characteristics of a hard worker, according to the 1 Thessalonians passage?
- How can you “humbly acknowledge” the hard work of those around you?
