Five Myths About CEOs - Part V

In their book, The CEO Next Door, authors Elena Botelho and Kim Powell dived deeply into survey data to determine what similar attributes surfaced for successful CEOs. Their findings debunked several myths we sometimes hold about CEOs. A final myth we will look at is this: experience trumps all.

In fact, the authors’ research revealed that first time CEOs were no less likely to meet or exceed expectations than those with prior CEO experience. In other words, the past experiences of new CEOs can be adequate training for good performance. 

Joshua was a new leader, but he had 40 years’ experience following in Moses’ footsteps. After Joshua’s first big battle, we read in Joshua 6:27, "So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land."

If you’re starting a new role, remember, with God you too can exceed expectations.

Questions for Reflection: 

• Have you ever believed that experience trumps all in the workplace? What led you to this belief?  
• Based upon what you know about God, why do you believe the Lord was with Joshua? 
• Are there others with more experience than you whom you believe deserve the position to which God has called you? What does this lesson teach you about your misgivings?

Heavenly Father, you are sovereign in all workplaces. If you appoint kings, as Your word says, we know you appoint CEOs, too. We confess we’ve had preconceived ideas about CEOs. We sometimes think they have larger-than-life personalities, that they are destined for greatness from an early age, that they have flawless resumes, and work harder than everyone else. Thank you that you look not upon the experience of a person, but on a person’s heart in the marketplace. Help us see the marketplace from Your perspective. Amen.
