 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">Rahab and the Spies</div><div class="p">1Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. &#8220;Go, look over the land,&#8221; he said, &#8220;especially Jericho.&#8221; So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.</div><div class="p">2The king of Jericho was told, &#8220;Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.&#8221; 3So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: &#8220;Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.&#8221;</div><div class="p">4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, &#8220;Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don&#8217;t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.&#8221; 6(But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut.</div><div class="p">8Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9and said to them, &#8220;I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea#2:10 Or the Sea of Reeds for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.#2:10 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them. 11When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone&#8217;s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.</div><div class="p">12&#8220;Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them&#8212;and that you will save us from death.&#8221;</div><div class="p">14&#8220;Our lives for your lives!&#8221; the men assured her. &#8220;If you don&#8217;t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.&#8221;</div><div class="p">15So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16She said to them, &#8220;Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way.&#8221;</div><div class="p">17Now the men had said to her, &#8220;This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.&#8221;</div><div class="p">21&#8220;Agreed,&#8221; she replied. &#8220;Let it be as you say.&#8221;</div><div class="p">So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.</div><div class="p">22When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24They said to Joshua, &#8220;The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">The Sign of Immanuel</div><div class="p">1When Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.</div><div class="p">2Now the house of David was told, &#8220;Aram has allied itself with#7:2 Or has set up camp in Ephraim&#8221;; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.</div><div class="p">3Then the Lord said to Isaiah, &#8220;Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,#7:3 Shear-Jashub means a remnant will return. to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer&#8217;s Field. 4Say to him, &#8216;Be careful, keep calm and don&#8217;t be afraid. Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood&#8212;because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah. 5Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah&#8217;s son have plotted your ruin, saying, 6&#8220;Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.&#8221; 7Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;It will not take place,</div><div class="q2">it will not happen,</div><div class="q1">8for the head of Aram is Damascus,</div><div class="q2">and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.</div><div class="q1">Within sixty-five years</div><div class="q2">Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people.</div><div class="q1">9The head of Ephraim is Samaria,</div><div class="q2">and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah&#8217;s son.</div><div class="q1">If you do not stand firm in your faith,</div><div class="q2">you will not stand at all.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11&#8220;Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.&#8221;</div><div class="p">12But Ahaz said, &#8220;I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.&#8221;</div><div class="p">13Then Isaiah said, &#8220;Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you#7:14 The Hebrew is plural. a sign: The virgin#7:14 Or young woman will conceive and give birth to a son, and#7:14 Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scrolls son, and he or son, and they will call him Immanuel.#7:14 Immanuel means God with us. 15He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste. 17The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away from Judah&#8212;he will bring the king of Assyria.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Assyria, the Lord&#8217;s Instrument</div><div class="p">18In that day the Lord will whistle for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria. 19They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices in the rocks, on all the thornbushes and at all the water holes. 20In that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River&#8212;the king of Assyria&#8212;to shave your heads and private parts, and to cut off your beards also. 21In that day, a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats. 22And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds and honey. 23In that day, in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,#7:23 That is, about 25 pounds or about 12 kilograms there will be only briers and thorns. 24Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers and thorns. 25As for all the hills once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns; they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.</div>

 <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">Peter&#8217;s Miraculous Escape From Prison</div><div class="p">1It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 3When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. 4After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.</div><div class="p">5So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.</div><div class="p">6The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. &#8220;Quick, get up!&#8221; he said, and the chains fell off Peter&#8217;s wrists.</div><div class="p">8Then the angel said to him, &#8220;Put on your clothes and sandals.&#8221; And Peter did so. &#8220;Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,&#8221; the angel told him. 9Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.</div><div class="p">11Then Peter came to himself and said, &#8220;Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod&#8217;s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.&#8221;</div><div class="p">12When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14When she recognized Peter&#8217;s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, &#8220;Peter is at the door!&#8221;</div><div class="p">15&#8220;You&#8217;re out of your mind,&#8221; they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, &#8220;It must be his angel.&#8221;</div><div class="p">16But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. &#8220;Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,&#8221; he said, and then he left for another place.</div><div class="p">18In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.</div><div class="s1">Herod&#8217;s Death</div><div class="p">Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. 20He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king&#8217;s country for their food supply.</div><div class="p">21On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22They shouted, &#8220;This is the voice of a god, not of a man.&#8221; 23Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.</div><div class="p">24But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.</div><div class="s1">Barnabas and Saul Sent Off</div><div class="p">25When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from#12:25 Some manuscripts to Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.</div>
