            <div class="label">4</div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="JOS.4.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Joshua, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JOS.4.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">&#8220;Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JOS.4.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JOS.4.3"></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JOS.4.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JOS.4.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">and said to them, &#8220;Go over before the ark of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JOS.4.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, &#8216;What do these stones mean?&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JOS.4.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JOS.4.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JOS.4.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JOS.4.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">4:9 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">Joshua also set up twelve stones</span></span></span><span class="content"> in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JOS.4.9"></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JOS.4.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JOS.4.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JOS.4.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JOS.4.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> to the plains of Jericho for war.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JOS.4.13"></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JOS.4.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">That day the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JOS.4.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JOS.4.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Then the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Joshua, </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JOS.4.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law to come up out of the Jordan.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JOS.4.16"></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JOS.4.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">So Joshua commanded the priests, &#8220;Come up out of the Jordan.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JOS.4.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JOS.4.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JOS.4.18"></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="JOS.4.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="JOS.4.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="JOS.4.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">He said to the Israelites, &#8220;In the future when your descendants ask their parents, &#8216;What do these stones mean?&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="JOS.4.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">tell them, &#8216;Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JOS.4.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">For the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">4:23 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">the Sea of Reeds</span></span></span><span class="content"> when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JOS.4.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is powerful and so that you might always fear the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God.&#8221;</span></span></div>

            <div class="label">14</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">In Iconium</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ACT.14.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ACT.14.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.14.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.14.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.14.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.14.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.14.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">where they continued to preach the gospel.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">In Lystra and Derbe</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.14.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.14.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.14.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.14.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">and called out, &#8220;Stand up on your feet!&#8221; At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.14.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.14.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, &#8220;The gods have come down to us in human form!&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.14.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.14.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.14.13"></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.14.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.14.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">&#8220;Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.14.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">In the past, he let all nations go their own way. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.14.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.14.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.14.18"></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.14.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.14.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Return to Antioch in Syria</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.14.20"></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.14.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.14.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. &#8220;We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,&#8221; they said. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.14.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Paul and Barnabas appointed elders</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">14:23 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">Barnabas ordained elders</span><span class="ft">; or </span><span class="fqa">Barnabas had elders elected</span></span></span><span class="content"> for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="ACT.14.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia, </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.14.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.14.25"></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="ACT.14.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="ACT.14.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="ACT.14.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.</span></span></div>
