Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture MemorizationSample

We are His Children
Pray…
Heavenly Father, you are too wonderful for my words to describe. I long for the day when your way of doing this is the norm. When justice prevails and peace reigns. Until that day, give us what we need for today. Help us to forgive others the same way you forgive us. Show us how to live in the light of your Kingdom, and guide us on the right path. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Read…
Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 NLT
Consider…
God is our Father and we are His kids. He’s the kind of Father that will never stop loving us. And because of Jesus, we have been adopted back into His family. God’s family is defined by love and service. As His children, we get to imitate His example and show others that this is a family where everyone is welcome.
Do you believe that God loves you like His own son or daughter? If not, ask yourself why and ask the Holy Spirit to show you how loved you really are. If so, then let that love wash over you. Don’t skip over it. The love God has for you is real and it is a big deal. Let it sink in.
Practice…
“Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9-13 NLT
Write this passage down on a piece of paper, a note card, or in your journal. After that, take a few minutes to practice memorizing these verses in whatever way works best for you. At this point in the journey, there are probably some things that you know have been really helpful and some things that maybe didn’t work as well for you. Before you finish practicing, pray and ask God to plant these words deep in your heart.
Listen…
Set a timer for five minutes.
Find a quiet place and get alone with God. Maybe it’s outside, in your bedroom, or in your car. Just be still and listen to what God may be saying to you.
Ask Him to speak.
When you get distracted from your listening, come back to Jesus by meditating on your memory verse. Ask the Holy Spirit to change you to look more like Jesus today.

About this Plan

In part 4 of Becoming Like Jesus, we are going to explore what it looks like and why it matters to internalize truth. We are going to let God’s Word do what it’s meant to: transform us from the inside out. And there’s no better place to start than with the core who we are, letting His truth shape our identity.
