Naomi went through so much pain in her life. With her husband and 2 sons, she moved away from Israel to the land of Moab when famine struck. They lived as strangers in the land. Later on, her husband died, followed by her 2 sons 10 years later.
She was broken to pieces. She left everything she had in Israel only to lose everything in Moab. She then decided to go back to Israel and suggested that her 2 daughters-in-law return to their families. She did not want them to go down the road of misery with her.
Now let’s see what Ruth, one of her daughters-in-law, said to her.
But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”
Ruth 1:16-17 (NIV)
Wow! Naomi was not expecting that, but it was a comfort for her wounded heart. It is true what the Bible says. that gracious words are sweet and have healing power.
Naomi and Ruth’s lives were forever changed, and it all started with Ruth’s comforting words to Naomi. How about you?
How often do your words become medicine to those who hear them? Or, on the contrary, are they a sharp dagger piercing the hearts of those who hear, even when you might think you are right about what you say?
Devotion for Parents
How often do your words hurt your spouse and children? You may not realize it, or you might even feel like that’s just the way you talk. Your family should accept you the way you are. But actually, you can change the way you talk. The question is, would you like to?
Devotion for Kids
When your parents are having problems, what do you say to them? Do you speak words of encouragement, or do you give them even more headaches?
Family Devotion Time
Let’s learn to speak pleasantly. Not just making small talk, but actually speaking words that come from the heart. Remember that the Truth doesn’t have to be spoken harshly. We can choose to speak it in a different tone. Make a commitment to do this every day.
