DAY 9 OF 31

Matthew 15:21-28 tells the story of a Canaanite woman who begged Jesus to set her demon-possessed daughter free. During that time, Canaanites (non-Jewish), who were considered the gentiles, were not allowed to blend in with the Jews. But this woman was desperate. She approached Jesus and begged Him for help.

Jesus’ responded in an unusual manner. Not only did He not answer her request, His disciples urged Him to send her away. Then, He answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” (Matthew 15:26 NIV)

If I were that woman, I would have been upset and felt offended because I was likened to a dog. But the woman’s response was extraordinary. No matter how humiliated she must have felt, she humbly said, “Yes, it is, Lord. Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” (Matthew 15:27 NIV)

I am sure that Jesus did not intend to humiliate the woman. He was testing the woman’s faith and to see if she would be persistent in seeking for her daughter’s healing. After Jesus saw her faith, a miracle happened and her daughter was set free.

A mother will always give her best for her family and children. Many times, she overlooks her own personal interests. In this story, the Canaanite woman disregarded her self-worth by being likened to a dog, for the sake of her daughter. On this Mother’s Day, let us give thanks to God for mothers and appreciate our mothers for all their sacrifices.

Devotion for Parents
To all mothers, your sacrifices will not be in vain. Remember that God cares and His eyes are upon you.

To all fathers, remember the days when your wives carried, gave birth to and took care of your children. Have you given your wife the appreciation she deserves?

Devotion for Kids
A mother will always try to give the best for her children - you. Is there anything that she does or gives to you that impresses you? Share your story.

Family Devotion Time
Fathers and children, do something for your wife / mom on this special Mother’s Day. For example, prepare dinner, help her with house chores, or anything to show your love for her and your appreciation for her sacrifices.
