Hannah prayed to God for a son for so many years. In all those years, Hannah had to put up with Peninnah, her husband’s other wife, who constantly mocked and irritated her. Her heart was sorrowful and worried. However, that did not stop her from drawing herself close to God. On the contrary, she kept on begging until one day God gave her a son, named Samuel.
After Samuel was born, Hannah waited for the right time to surrender Samuel to God. Can you imagine how she must have felt? Her long-awaited child, the child whom she had prayed for, but she could only care for a little while before she gave him to God to minister in the temple. On one hand, she was devastated, but on the other hand, she knew this had to be done to fulfill her promise to God long before Samuel was born. She had to follow through with what she had promised, no matter what.
Similarly, we ask for so many things from God in exchange for a promise. When our request is granted, do we do our part, which is fulfilling our promise to God? Can we learn from Hannah?
Holding on and fulfilling a promise may not always be easy, but let’s learn from Hannah. God is a great example of Someone who always does what He has promised to do. As His children, let us do the same.
Devotion for Parents
Is there any vow or promise that you have not fulfilled to God? Let’s do what we said we’ll do. Be a role model to our children and keep our promises.
Devotion for Kids
It is important to fulfill a promise. Don’t say it if you can’t carry it through, or have no intention of fulfilling it. This is one way of becoming the light wherever you are.
Family Devotion Time
Try to remember if there are any of God’s promises that have not been fulfilled in your life. I don’t think there are. Instead, question yourself, how many broken promises have you made? From now on, be a promise keeper, no matter what.
