How do we invest well over time? If you were to ask this question of someone investing their finances, the answer would be for them to get a trusted financial advisor. So, what might the answer be for us when it comes to our spiritual investments? Similarly, we should seek the help of a trusted spiritual advisor, something we sometimes call a mentor. Now, it’s true that the word “mentor” is not found in the Bible. However, the Bible does give numerous examples of what it looks like for people to seek spiritual guidance from others. Moses was mentored by his father-in-law Jethro, first as a son-in-law and then as a leader (Exodus 18). The discipleship relationship between Eli and Samuel prepared Samuel for the tasks and responsibilities that were his after Eli’s death (1 Samuel 1-4). Jesus was an example for His disciples (Luke 9), and both Barnabas and Paul excelled in pastoring others (Acts 9-15). There is a precedent for everyone to find a mentor or two to help them invest spiritually over time. Proverbs, written by the wisest person to walk the planet (apart from Jesus), has a bunch of insight to give on the topic of leaning into or seeking out wisdom. As you read our passages today, try to answer the question as to why seeking the wisdom of others is so important for us.
