GREATER THINGS

DAY 6 OF 8

DAY 6: MINOR DETAILS

The very first miracle Jesus performed wasn’t a life-or-death miracle. It wasn’t a crazy healing. It wasn’t even life-changing. He turned water into wine at a wedding.

Can you imagine? Jesus was on a mission to save the entire world, and He took the time to attend a wedding. But in fact, He didn’t just attend… He saved the day.

The wine was gone and the people were panicked. Mary, Jesus’ mother, couldn’t figure out how to solve the problem, so she brought the servants to Jesus (Pro-tip: that’s always a good place to start). Running out of wine at a wedding was a big deal during that time, but from Jesus’ perspective, it probably wouldn’t be labeled a crisis. But Jesus still intervened, not to save the hosts of the wedding from death, but simply to save them from embarrassment.

Jesus was God in human form, which means He’s the best glimpse we have of God. And from the very beginning of His earthly ministry, Jesus proved His power and concern for even the small matters of His people’s lives. Turning water into wine wasn’t a one-off miracle. Jesus was always meeting the various needs of those around Him.

Remember that mountain top moment we referenced with Jesus, Peter, James, and John, when they heard the audible voice of God? When they left that holy place, Peter was immediately hit with the reality that his taxes were due. It’s no wonder Peter was trying to camp out up there. He wasn’t ready to face the real world.

After Jesus healed the demon-possessed boy, He also intervened and paid Peter’s taxes. And He didn’t do it by giving Peter a paycheck. He told Peter to go catch a fish and open its mouth, and inside he would find enough money to pay his taxes (and Jesus’ too). Jesus met an ordinary need in an extraordinary way to strengthen Peter’s faith.

Maybe you’re reading this and you can’t even think about “greater things” because you’re trying to figure out the ordinary things. Like, how am I going to afford college? Or, how am I going to restore that friendship? How am I going to get through that class? Just because you’re not desperate for healing doesn’t mean you don’t need help.

Be encouraged. God cares about what keeps you awake at night, and He loves to work in all situations — no matter how big or how insignificant they seem. God doesn’t reserve His power for special occasions or the “big stuff.” He wants us to look for greater things in ordinary places and situations. So bring Him everything that’s on your heart and mind, and then don’t forget to praise Him for the “minor” miracles He works in your day-to-day life.

About this Plan

GREATER THINGS

Jesus did incredible things during His time on earth. And before He left, He said we would do even greater things after He was gone. That’s a huge promise coming from the One who walked on water and conquered death. But with God, what if we really are capable of more than we imagine? What if we have the power to change the world? What if greater things are ahead?
